Anxiety is long and gradual; panic is short and sharp. The difference matters for how you respond.
Both come from the same alarm system, but timing and intensity differ.
Generalized anxiety
- Lasts hours or days.
- Comes with persistent tension, sleeplessness, concentration trouble.
- Eases with slow breathing and self-care.
Panic attack
- Peaks within 10 minutes.
- Intense physical signs: pounding heart, shortness of breath, sense of impending doom.
- Ends on its own within 20-30 minutes.
What helps during a panic
- Reminder: it will end.
- Slow breathing: in for 4, hold 4, out for 6.
- Focus on 5 things you can see.
